Acupuncture is a vital component of Traditional Chinese Medicine and has been used successfully for thousands of years. It is now the most widely used drug free healthcare treatment in the world. It is recognised as a safe treatment by the World Health Organisation.
Diagnosis
is based on the theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine and adopts a holistic
approach to treat the root cause of the problem. The principles of Traditional
Chinese Medicine are based on promoting the free flow of vital energy known
as Qi which circulates the body in established meridians. If there is a blockage
or stagnation of Qi in any of the meridians imbalance and ill health arise.
The aim of treatment is to relieve the stagnation by the insertion of very
fine needles into selected acupuncture points along the meridians thereby
facilitating the bodys own healing.
Sterile disposable needles are used and strict standards of hygiene are maintained at all times.
Acupuncture
may be used with other elements of Traditional Chinese Medicine
such as Cupping, Moxibustion, Tui
Na or Chinese Herbal Patent Medicine.
Will
acupuncture interfere with other treatments?
Acupuncture
may safely be used in conjunction with other prescribed treatments and may
enhance the effect of some treatments but you must inform your Acupuncture
Practitioner of other concurrent treatments.
Research has demonstrated that the outcome of I.V.F. treatment is greatly improved by acupuncture.
How
long does a treatment take?
The initial consultation
may take up to an hour as a detailed history will be taken. Subsequent treatments
normally take between forty five minutes and an hour.
The number of treatment sessions required will vary according to the condition.
Most acute conditions respond very quickly to treatment whereas long standing
illnesses will usually require a course of treatment sessions.
Other
Elements of Traditional Chinese Medicine
Some of the following treatments may be used to compliment Acupuncture or
may occasionally be used as an alternative.
Moxibustion is a gentle heat treatment used to treat certain conditions. It may be applied with or without acupuncture.
Cupping is a therapy used to stimulate the acupuncture points and move Qi along the meridians by creating a vacuum on the surface of the skin. It also relieves muscular tension and improves the circulation creating a feeling of relaxation.
Tui Na therapy is used to apply pressure to the acupuncture points and channels by massage and manipulation.
Electro stimulation may be used by attaching electrodes to the acupuncture needles in certain circumstances. This is not painful and results in a tingling sensation. This is particularly beneficial in the treatment of musculo skeletal problems.
Chinese Herbal Medicine may be prescribed for some conditions to compliment acupuncture.
Dietary advice based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine is helpful in many conditions.
